Board game - Urban Empire

Project type

3D

Date

2025

Location

Manchester Metroploitian University

This is a hexagonal-based board game designed to promote environmentally friendly practices from a University project. This was a group project that I took on as the group lead.

You start the game with a city tile, which can accommodate up to 4 people. This can be upgraded; the city tile also claims the surrounding tiles around it. The city can be upgraded using minerals and wood, which will then create space for two additional people, while claiming an additional six tiles. The player can choose, but must all be adjacent to other claimed tiles within the city and not the town. When the city is upgraded the third time it creates space for another 3 people and allows the player to claim another six tiles.

The housing tile can be placed on either the grassland, the woods, or the mountain tiles. These tiles will be leveled in the digital version. If any upgrades have been placed on the tile you are trying to make, they will be refunded at half of their resource cost. The housing can be upgraded again into three stages, providing 3 people initially, then plus 2, and then plus 2 again.

The main way the player is able to win is to build a metropolis, which is to upgrade the city to the 4th stage and win the game; the first to do that wins.
If the players want to cut the game short

The premise for the game is a board game to teach the player about resource management and slowly destroying the environment, the more the city grows. The player slowly takes over land for their growing city, constantly having to build more and take more from their land to keep their population growing. This isn't a story-driven game but a turn-based board, that we believe has been kept simple enough for players 5 and up.

The town tile is a tile that is placed on the edge of the city's borders, and only on grassland, woods, or mountain tiles. This tile is used to expand the borders of the city, the town can hold an extra 2 population , and when upgraded has a plus 1 and a plus 1, while claiming another 3 tiles each time. So plus initially claiming all tiles adjacent, then claiming plus 3, plus.
